2013 Veterans Day Discounts & Freebies – The Ultimate Guide

With Veterans Day around the corner, we wanted everyone to know about the great discounts and freebies available in your community. We have compiled a list of restaurants, parks, retailers, and more that will be offering Veterans, Service Members, and their families freebies and deals on services and goods.

Remember: Always check with the establishment in your area, not all locations on these lists are participating. You will also want to ensure you have proof of your service (Military ID, Drivers Licence with Veterans Designation, DD214, a photo ID in uniform, wearing your uniform, or some other proof of service). Finally, always ask your server/cashier/attendant for the discount, don’t assume they know about the discount or freebie… plus, you know what they say about assuming… 😉

We have compiled the lists according to type of establishment. Click on the link and you will be able to view the PDF in your browser then opt to print or save the list by clicking the appropriate icon on the bottom right. Have fun, enjoy, and thank you for your service!

Home Depot Is Stepping It Up With New Veteran Employment Assistance Community

There are a lot websites out there that advertise jobs, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a conversation with a REAL person? Wouldn’t it be great to connect to a recruiter to show them what a great employee you’d be?

Well, The Home Depot has created a brand new community where you can do just that. The community, named HomeTown, has a specific group to help veterans during their career search by giving them a place to network and have live conversations with recruiters.

Within the HomeTown community, veterans can:

• Chat directly with recruiters

• Learn from exclusive articles and free webinars

• Network with other military members and veterans

The Home Depot intends this free community to be your central hub to learn, grow and enhance your career. Veterans who take advantage of this free service will most definitely have an advantage when it comes time to applying and interviewing for their next career.

You can join the HomeTown community at: www.homedepotcommunity.com

ONGOING COMMITMENT

The Home Depot’s support of the nation’s military extends beyond the new HomeTown community as they offer plenty of resources to veterans. The company recently launched a new website highlighting this commitment (www.homedepotmilitary.com) and has offered its free Military Skills Translator Tool for some time now. The Skills Translator Tool is designed to help translate and match an applicant’s military skills to positions that might offer the best career fit.

The company has also partnered with military-focused career fairs and participates in multiple events throughout the year.

VetJobs, G.I. Jobs magazine and Military Spouse magazine have all named The Home Depot a top military-friendly employer.

Siemens Offers CAD / CAM Training to Veterans

Original Article from 3D Printer World by Brooke Kaelin (see original here: http://goo.gl/41yOw)

Engineering and electronics giant Siemens is partnering with Still Serving Veterans to offer computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD, CAM & CAE) training to U.S. veterans.

Vets who have previously worked in drafting or engineering can apply to the Siemens PLM USA Veterans Initiative Program.  The V.I.P. program is offered at twenty-two U.S. locations and is designed to help with the transition from active service to civilian employment.

Once approved, each vet will receive up to $17,000 worth of scholarship funding and they will be allowed to choose which training classes they would like to take.

Siemens is offering ten different courses for vets to choose from, all with a focus on their Teamcenter and NX (CAD/CAM/CAE) technology.  The classes last between two and five days each, and participants will learn everything about the software programs, from installation to advanced design.

This outreach comes at a time when approximately 7.1% of all veterans are unemployed and there are only a handful of companies offering this type of free extended training.

According to Chuck Grindstaff, president and CEO of Siemens PLM software, “Siemens wants to do its part in showing our gratitude as we welcome our veterans home and for many, what they need most, is a job that allows them to re-acclimate to civilian life and support their families.  We think this program will help.”

Over the last two years, Siemens has employed over 1,000 veterans and has plans to hire more in the future.  They are very careful to say that participating in this scholarship program does not guarantee employment with them or anyone else.  However, they invite anyone who successfully completes the courses to put in an application with them.

Even without a concrete job offer from Siemens, participants will still have plenty of employment opportunities.  They can put in an application with one of Siemen’s 70,000 customers who also use their CAD/CAM technology.  All that combined military experience plus the extended civilian training is going to look great on a resume.

If you’re interested in applying for the program, you can view the details here.
